1. CONSULT YOUR PROFESSOR: Email your professor to set up a meeting to discuss the possibility of getting a peer tutor. Your professor will determine whether a peer tutor is the best way to support you. Your professor may ask you if you have taken advantage of other resources, such as faculty office hours, the Moss Quantitative Center, the Writing Center, Research and Instruction Librarians, teaching assistant review sessions, drop-in hours, etc.
  2. IDENTIFY AND SELECT A PEER TUTOR: If your professor thinks a peer tutor would be helpful, they will recommend tutors from an approved list. Contact the tutor as quickly as possible to see if they are available (your professor may do that for you as well). If you have not heard from the tutor within 48 hours, contact another tutor that your professor recommended. If you end up needing tutorial assistance for more than 3 hours a week in a particular course, please discuss this with your professor and contact the Peer Tutoring Coordinator. Please be advised Class Deans are also available to offer time management assistance to any students who might need this additional support.

  3. INFORM US WHOM YOU WILL BE STUDYING WITH:  After establishing a working agreement with your tutor, please email Raphaela Moreno in Student Affairs, rmoreno@amherst.edu. You should also contact Raphaela if for any reason you decide not to use a tutor or if you decide to get a different tutor.
  4. CONTACT YOUR PEER TUTOR TO ARRANGE A MEETING TIME AND READ ABOUT EFFECTIVE USE OF PEER TUTORING.
