As its final concert of the 2022-2023 season, the Amherst Symphony Orchestra (ASO) presents the popular and colorful orchestral suite The Planets (1916), by English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1924). The Planets is often mischaracterized as a programmatic series of musical depictions of the seven then-known planets of our solar system (leaving out planet Earth), but is better understood as orchestral examinations of differing aspects of the human psyche--whether bellicose (Mars), peaceful (Venus), jolly (Jupiter) or mystical (Neptune). The orchestra is joined by volunteer members of the Amherst Glee Club led by Charlotte Wang '24. Mark Lane Swanson, music director, conducts.
Doors open half an hour before the concert begins. Admission is FREE.
