Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the the Lenten Season - the 40 days before Easter that invite us to seek conversion—a change of heart—and repentance—a turning away from sin and seeking a closer relationship with God. Fr. Warren Savage is presiding. The Mass will concludewith the distribution of ashes.

Mass today at 5:00 in Chapin Chapel - First Sunday of Lent.

As we begin this Lenten season, we find that all three readings are harmonized. The first reading and the Gospel are tied together by the second reading. Saint Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, shows how the transgression of Adam and Eve is overcome by the righteousness of Jesus. Listening to these sacred scriptures, let us be grateful for the love of our God, who rescues us from our sinfulness.

Our presiding celebrant is Rev. Dan Pacholec. Hope to see you this afternoon.
Fr. Dan will arrive about 1/2 hour early for confessions.

All of today’s readings are about the mission that God has for those who follow God. Isaiah speaks of being God’s servant; Saint Paul says he was called to be an apostle; and John the Baptist, himself a servant of God, identifies Jesus as the Son of God. As we hear these sacred scriptures proclaimed, let us make the refrain of the responsorial psalm our own prayer: “Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.”

Mass today at 5:00 in Chapin Chapel - 2nd Sunday of Easter - Divine Mercy Sunday.

Every year we celebrate Easter for seven weeks—a “week of weeks”—because we need all this time to appreciate all the new things that God is doing in our lives. So, on this Second Sunday of Easter, which the Church has also designated as the Sunday of Divine Mercy, we focus on the early church and how those disciples received and spread the Good News of God’s merciful love. May we learn much from them as we pray together today.

Our first reading from Isaiah sounds as if we were still in the Christmas season: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” But paired with today’s Gospel, which repeats that phrase, it makes a powerful prelude to the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the calling of the first apostles.

The 3rd Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete - or Rejoice. Our waiting is half over and we are called to be patient. Millennia have passed since Isaiah’s vision and Jesus’ ministry, and still James exhorts us to be patient. The Kingdom’s growth, not to mention its harvest, takes time. Yet for James, “patient” does not mean “passive.” Humanity’s transformation should at least begin among believers, who are called not only to await but to anticipate the Lord’s coming.

We continue our celebration of Easter today by again hearing stories from the early church. We who have completed our Lenten journey of renewal, as well as those of us who are newly baptized, can together hear these stories and use them to deepen our own faith. As we celebrate together today, let us each resolve to take the Good News of Easter that we share with each other and spread it at school, at home, at work, and in the world around us.

Mass today at 5:00 in Chapin Chapel - Third Sunday of Lent.

This Sunday begins a series of Gospels from John, revealing Jesus as living water to the Samaritan woman, the light of the world to the man born blind, the resurrection and life to Lazarus, and indeed to all those preparing for Baptism or baptismal renewal. In each Gospel, Jesus progressively bestows God’s amazing grace on someone, who in turn becomes a source of grace for others, and becomes a model and paradigm for our own Lenten journey.

As we gather at God’s invitation, we continue our Ordinary Time reflections on discipleship today with Jesus’ teaching of the Beatitudes. How blessed we are to know that God loves even the least of us and wants all of us to live by the law of love. May our prayer today be for the grace to live the Beatitudes as Christ desires that we do.
