In Memory

Edwin Johnson “Ted” Titsworth died peacefully at his home in Advance, N.C., on June 6, 2012. He was born in Providence, R.I., and graduated from Providence Country Day School, where he was the center on the football team. He graduated from Amherst with a major in history and was a member of Chi Psi and manager of the track and wrestling teams. Amherst continued to be an integral part of his life as he worked tirelessly with the alumni office raising money and writing news for the alumni magazine. After graduating from Amherst, he flew for American Airlines for two years and then joined the marketing and sales division of Koppers Co., from which he retired after 38 years. He then was general manager of the University Club of Pittsburgh, cofounder of RISCO (marketing and selling roofing materials) and a member of the city council when Bermuda Run, N.C., incorporated. He served on the city council until age 88.

Ted was a maniacal Steelers fan and an ardent golfer. His proudest moment was a hole-in-one while vacationing in Scotland. Wherever he lived, from Boston to Pittsburgh to Seabrook Island, S.C., to Bermuda Run, Ted was an active member of the Episcopal Church as a treasurer, an acolyte and a member of vestries. He acolyted two weeks before his death at age 93. Using a fund of pennies that his wife had saved from childhood as seed money, he founded the Memorial Garden at St. Clement Episcopal Church, Clemmons, N.C. Never inactive, he delivered 17 meals for Meals on Wheels two days before his death.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, of 53 years and daughter Tracy. He leaves daughter Carolyn Slavin of Knoxville, Tenn.; son John Titsworth of New Orleans, La.; four granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
