In Memory

Fred Lepley passed away peacefully on April 8, 2012, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Fred prepared for Amherst at Detroit University School.  At Amherst, he was active in the Pre-Med Club and the Masquers. In his letter to the Class of 1951’s 50th reunion book, he said, “My most enjoyable experiences were working at Kirby Theater and becoming an Amherst Masquer.”

After Amherst, he received an M.D. degree from the Western Reserve University School of Medicine (now Case Western Reserve). Following an internship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and service as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, he was an ophthalmologist in Grosse Pointe, Mich., for more than 40 years, in private practice and with Grosse Pointe Ophthalmology group practice.

While in medical school, he met Nancy Ann Hendershott, a nursing student at Western Reserve. They married in 1956 and had four children: Anne (Matthew) Wilkins, Susan (Daniel) Hinger, Frederick Jr. (Deborah) and Jeffrey; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe, Mich. He loved spending time with his family, especially at the family cottage at Menonaqua Beach in Harbor Springs, Mich. He was a member of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, where he served as a trustee and was also a member of the Senior Men’s Club.

While many of his Amherst classmates had lost touch with Fred over the years, he is remembered as a friendly, hard-working student on his way to a successful professional career.
