In Memory

We lost Steve Maurer on Feb. 10, 2014, at the age of only 69. We remember him as imposing in stature and resonant of voice but also kindly, laid-back, patient, resolute and supportive. He had a soft, easy grin.

Steve was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. Family moves landed him in Lakewood, Ohio, in 1955. There, as a boy of 13, he met schoolmate Jean Wisneskey, who much later became the love of his life. His family ultimately settled in Lancaster, Pa., where Steve was the consummate scholar-athlete at Manheim Township High School.

At Amherst, Steve was an American Studies major and president of Phi Delta Sigma. With typical quiet and determined style, he was a devastating offensive and defensive end on the Amherst football team in the era before two-platoon substitution. Steve was fiercely proud of the undefeated season of 1964. Yet what I remember most vividly was his endearing struggle, prior to each game, to insert his 1960s-era saucer-style contact lenses.

In his later years at Amherst, Steve reconnected with Jean, then a college student in Ohio. They married in December of 1966, when Steve was at the University of Minnesota School of Law. After four years as assistant attorney general in Minnesota, Steve, Jean and their young family moved to Akron in 1973. There they operated Hickory Farms of Ohio for many years. In 1990, Steve landed at the Cole Company law firm, where he practiced law—combining skill and compassion—for the rest of his career.

Steve and Jean were regulars at ’66 reunions. He changed little over the years—still trim, quiet, resolute and resonant, with the perpetual sly grin. We will miss him.

Steve leaves his wife Jean, daughter Sage, son Joel and three grandchildren.
