Dean died on Sept. 25. We were buddies for many years growing up in Glen Ridge, N.J. Dean, Gus Bourne (also ’51) and I went through grammar school, Glen Ridge High and Amherst together. While in high school, we all served in the New Jersey State Guard before going on to Amherst. Diz and I enlisted in the naval reserve and Gus joined the Army. Then after the war we became roommates at Amherst.
Following graduation, Diz moved to Texas to join the Great American Insurance Co. of Dallas. He continued to manage a friend’s Kwik Kopy shop well into his senior years.
He married the love of his life, Carolyn, on Oct. 14, 1978. Their courtship included many trips to the Willow Bend Polo and Country Club in Plano, Texas. An avid horseman all his life, he never missed a chance to experience horses firsthand.
Diz’s faith was exemplified by his decades of service at First Presbyterian of Richardson and most recently at Grace Presbyterian of Plano, where he was a deacon, frequent usher and volunteer.
Diz was a dear friend, and we will miss him.
