In Memory

Attorney John Callison Marks died in Seattle on May 8, 1981. Senator Henry M. Jackson described him as being “idealistic in the best sense.” John had worked for the senator in Washington prior to serving in several legal positions for the state. He was a member of the Washington State Bar since his graduation from Willamette University in 1973.

John appreciated the core curriculum which ended with the class of 1969. He chose to major in economics, but he excelled in all fields. A member of Psi Upsilon, he participated diligently in its activities from sports to singing. He loved singing in the Glee Club as well. During the last two years of college, John was co-owner of the Amherst College Newspaper Service, which brought the New York, Boston and Springfield papers to the campus.

Before coming to Amherst, John attended St. George’s in Spokane. The school is establishing a memorial bookshelf in the library for this distinguished alumnus. John was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olympia. He was unmarried and is survived by his mother, brother and nephews.
