Encounters with Nature is an Amherst College First-Year seminar taught by Professors Nicola Courtright and Rick Lopez '93 that explores the nature surrounding the college, including the college's Wildlife Sanctuary. Encounters with Nature also provides an introduction to liberal studies by helping students learn how to read and comprehend complex texts and images, respond to them in sophisticated ways, and engage in critical reasoning. For students, the experiential class pays specific attention to the ways we have recreated particular kinds of natural spaces, and how we have depicted nature in images.

Watch a video of students and faculty talking about the course, and some incredible sights and sounds of nature around Amherst.
