Read obituary

David was born in Medford, Mass., on May 11, 1922; he died on Feb. 22, 2012, in Northfield, Minn.

David was proud of his Scots ancestry. His mother was always singing. Betsy Green, his wife to be, grew up in a singing family. At Amherst, David sang in the glee club and was selected for its Double Quartet.

My recollections of David at Amherst involved his work with Professor McClelland in Religion 1 and 2. It was as an alumnus that I really became acquainted with David. We attended reunions and enjoyed visits in my hometown of Minnesota. Later in life we took a trip to Haddam, Conn., to visit Sandy Stearns ’39 and Judy. This was followed by an additional visit with us in Barbados. Years later David called on a classmate from seminary at the University of Virginia with us in tow.

Numerous other occasions brought us together, sharing many experiences.

One day David declared, “I want you to write my obituary!” Sadly, this has been one of the most difficult assignments of my life.

His final admonishment was to say, “And that isn’t all there is!” Amen.
