In Memory

Our class now mourns the death of Henry S. “Hank” Lively, who passed away on Jan. 11, at San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Hank was born in Fairmont, W.V. He attended Western Reserve Academy in Ohio and then Amherst. His time at Amherst, like so many of our class, was broken up by U.S. Army service in World War II.

Following his graduation from Amherst in 1948, Hank studied at Temple University Medical School, after which he had a 35-year career as an allergy specialist at the Guthrie Clinic at Sayre, Pa. During that period, he had many interests and took on extra-professional duties as a local school board member and with his church.

At the College, Hank was a great companion, with a serious, purposeful side that wasn’t always obvious. I remember him as a great reader and conversationalist, and not a bad wrestler. In later years, he and his wife, Jean, were frequent sailors. He was a gentleman farmer in Pennsylvania, and his interests included stargazing, bread baking, auto mechanics, skiing, opera and home remodeling.

Jean passed away in 2001.

This loving father leaves three children surviving: John Lively ’77, Shaw Lively and Laurie Logsdon ’84, and seven grandchildren. Henry Lively was truly an outstanding product of and representative for an Amherst education.
