In Memory

On June 18, 1990, Robert Charles Doran died in Boston after a lengthy illness. Born in Brooklyn in 1924, Bob attended Brooklyn Prep School and served in the U.S. Air Force before coming to Amherst in February of 1946. Like most veterans in 1949, he lived in Pratt dorm.

In June 1946, he was the shortstop of the famous Pratt team which won the college softball championship. A man of quick wit and laid-back sophistication, he was well known for being able to do the New York Sunday Times crossword puzzle faster than anyone else in Pratt or the DU house, of which he was a member.

After graduation, Bob went to work at Polaroid and then Collins & Aikman.

In June 1950, he married Janet Havenstein (Mount Holyoke ’50). Janet died in 1959, leaving three young daughters to be raised by their grandmother.

Surviving are Lynn Zimmerman of New Haven, Conn.; Susan Weitzmann of West Chester, Pa.; Barbara Doran of Baltimore; and four grandchildren.

Mary and Sam Moore ’49 were present at the memorial service for Bobby, each speaking of happy memories of him.

We have followed the family because Suzy and I are godparents of Bobby’s middle daughter, Susan, who is an important member of our family.
