Charles P. Northrop '63

Charles Porter Northrop died peacefully on December 17, 2014 in his home in Denver, CO surrounded by his family. Born in Rochester, New York on August 6, 1941, he was the son of Julia Allen Stebbins and William Watson Northrop. He is survived by a son, Charles Tyler Northrop and daughter-in-law, Erika Gunter Northrop of Vail, CO, daughter, Carrington Northrop Staahl, son-in-law Brett Theodore Staahl and grandson, Jack Carrington Staahl of San Francisco, CA, sister, Rindy Northrop and brother, James Northrop. Charles graduated cum laude from Amherst College in 1963. He received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1966 and began his legal career at Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle in Rochester, NY 1966-1972. He then became the President and CEO of Stirling Homex Corporation in Avon, New York 1972-1978. He and his family moved to Philadelphia when he became Vice President/Chief Legal Officer of Consolidated Rail Corporation. He and his family later moved to Colorado as he was named Vice President, General Counsel of Jones Intercable, Inc. He then ran a private law practice in Denver, CO for close to 20 years. In Denver, CO, Charles was a two-term President at Skyline Acres Swim & Tennis Club and a two-term President at The Denver Tennis Club. Charles also served as a Board Member, Chairman of Admissions Committee of the University Club of Denver. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held in Denver in the spring. He will be deeply missed by friends and family.
