On December 1, 2015, an estimated 500 students, faculty and staff—including President Biddy Martin, who spoke briefly—observed 4.5 minutes of silence and then walked around the quad chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot” at 1:01 p.m., the time Michael Brown Jr. of Ferguson, Mo., had been killed by police on Aug. 9. The event was part of the Ferguson National Call to Action, which is calling attention to Brown’s death and racial injustice:
