By the time of graduation, our students will gain the tools necessary to navigate an ethnic studies curriculum, such as the development of close reading, writing, and oral skills. Students from a variety of backgrounds will walk away knowing a much more complicated history than they likely imagined.

Through structured study provided by the AAPI Studies major, students will fulfill the following learning goals:

  • An understanding of the relationship among Asian American and Pacific Islander social groups, histories, politics, cultural identities, and socioeconomics, relative to other minoritized groups within the United States and through transnational perspectives
  • A knowledge of the cultural practices, artistic contributions, and literary achievements of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities
  • The interconnectedness of academic scholarship and Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and ways of engaging with communities, backed by rigorous training in academic inquiry in order to expertly interpret sources across a variety of genres
  • The methodological and interpretive tools necessary to navigate an interdisciplinary, ethnic studies curriculum, with particular attention to close reading of both primary and secondary sources as well as the development of advanced written and oral skills
