The Craft of Speaking I: Vocal Freedom

Listed in: Theater and Dance, as THDA-125H

Formerly listed as: THDA-32H

Faculty

Ron Bashford (Section 01)

Description

A beginning studio course in the development of voice for speaking. Students develop range and tone through regular physical exercises in relaxation, breathing technique, placement, and presence. Individual attention focuses on helping each student develop the physical, mental, and emotional self-awareness needed for expressive vocal production. Practice is oriented toward acting for the stage, but students with a primary interest in public speaking, teaching, or improved interpersonal communication will find this course valuable. A modicum of reading and written reflection is required. Three class meetings per week. A half course.

Admission with consent of the instructor. Limited to 28 students. Fall semester. Professor Bashford.

First-Year Students!

Submitted by Ron Bashford on Thursday, 8/9/2018, at 7:50 AM

Registration requires instructor permission.  Please request permission to register through AC Data when you choose your other courses on August 29.  I will approve a limited number of first-year students at the end of the day after all have requested permission.  Once you have permission, you may register for the course on AC Data.

You must attend the first day of class on September 5, or I may give your spot to someone on the waiting list.

If you do not get permission to register on August 29, but still want to see if you can get a place in the course, please come to the first class meeting on September 5 to secure your place on the waiting list.

Best,

Ron

If you did not pre-register for THDA 125H, please come to the first day of class on September 5 to be placed on the waiting list.  You should also request permission to register during Add/Drop on ACData.

Here are some other things everyone should know:

(1) Since THDA 125H is a half course, you must register for at least four other full courses in addition to THDA 125H in the Fall.  Students who complete THDA 125H may take THDA 225H in the spring as part of a 3.5 course load with the permission of their advisor(s).

(2) During Add/Drop, I will choose additional students as follows: Theater and Dance Majors first, then sophomores (Class of 2021), followed by seniors (Class of 2019) and then juniors and early-graduating seniors (Class of 2020, 19E and 20E).  A limited number of places are reserved for first-year students (Class of 2022).  If I cannot include all students in a particular category (potentially juniors and seniors), I will choose from among them at random.

(3) You must attend the first day of class in the Fall to remain in the course, even if you pre-registered in the spring.  If you do not attend the first day of class, I may give the spot to another student.  If you know ahead of time that you cannot attend the first day of class, please contact me.

(4) THDA 125H is a pre-requisite for continuation in THDA 225H (The Craft of Speaking II).  I strongly urge interested students to plan on taking both courses in sequence.  THDA 225H will be offered in Spring 2019, and will meet twice per week for 80 minutes each class.  If you are not a senior, you may also take THDA 225H in 2020 or 2021.
