This collection documents the life and activities of Russian émigré theater critic Nikolai Yantchevsky and several prominent Russian intellectuals from his circle. The collection is organized in two series, further divided into several subseries.

Series 1: Nikolai Yantchevsky Papers, 1907-1961, 1. 2 linear feet, further divided into three subseries.

  • Subseries 1, Correspondence, 1907-1955, 0.3 linear feet, consists of cataloged, arranged, family and outgoing correspondence. These subseries are organized alphabetically by correspondent and each folder is arranged in chronological order. Most unidentified correspondence has been placed in the beginning of the subseries.
  • Subseries 2, Account Books and Diaries, 1934-1959, 0.7 linear feet, contains incomplete set of Yantchevsky’s diaries documenting his life and is organized in chronological order.
  • Subseries 3. Writings, 1930; 1961, 0.2 linear feet contains draft of Yantchevsky’s manuscript and his book on Anton Chekhov, published in France.

Series 2: Papers of Contemporaries, 1781-1961, 1.8 linear feet, is the largest series of the collection and was artificially created to pull together all different materials found among Yantchevsky’s materials. The series is further divided into five subseries organized by type. They consist of correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, published and unpublished manuscripts, clippings, and photographs arranged in alphabetical order. Clippings are arranged in chronological order.

  • Subseries 1: Correspondence, 1781-1961, 0.3 linear feet, contains several folders with unidentified correspondence, Russian and French autographs, and correspondence of several prominent Russian émigrés. The subseries is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and is organized in chronological order.
  • Subseries 2: Diaries and Scrapbooks, 1922-1932, 0.4 linear feet, contains diaries and scrapbooks belonged to Yantchevsky’s friends and is arranged in chronological order.
  • Subseries 3: Writings of Contemporaries, 1928-1966, 0.5 linear feet, consists of published and unpublished manuscripts and draft notes. The series is organized alphabetically and each folder is arranged in chronological order. Subseries 4: Printed Materials, 1890; 1911-1962, 0.5 linear feet, consists of one journal and five folders with clippings arranged in chronological order. Subseries 5: Related Materials, n.d.; 1931, 0.2 linear feet, contains drawing by Fiodor Shaliapin, Jr., photographs of George Balanchine and Varia
