Five Amherst Teams Compete in NCAA Play

The incredible seasons of Amherst’s swimming and diving, women’s basketball, and women’s hockey teams ended this past weekend with stellar efforts in NCAA competition.

Men’s basketball also took to the court for post-season play; the squad advanced to the 2008 National NCAA Division III Final Four for the third straight year with a 65-55 win against Brandeis. Amherst welcomes NYU economics professor and former World Bank research economist William Easterly and 2001 Nobel Laureate and Columbia economics professor Joseph E. Stiglitz ’64 to discuss "Reducing Global Poverty."

Reinstituting the National Draft: April 4–5 

Amherst brings Boston University professor of international relations and former U.S. Army Colonel Andrew Bacevich to discuss the National Draft with 2004 presidential candidate and retired four-star U.S. Army General Wesley Clark. Sign-ups are first-come, first-served and limited to 40 people per colloquium.

Congdon Lands Grant for New Play

Constance S. Congdon, Amherst’s Playwright-in-Residence, was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant for the commissioning and research for an as-yet-untitled play about water in the Western United States. A prolific writer, Congdon was also featured in a light-hearted Feb. 21 Q&A in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer just prior to the opening of another of her works, The Imaginary Invalid.

President Tony W. Marx was quoted in a Feb. 28 Boston Globe article on the growing pressure facing colleges and universities to increase their endowment spending rates. "We need aid policies that ensure access, but that's not the end of the story," he told the newspaper.

Women's Basketball Team Wins NESCAC Championship

The top-seeded Lord Jeffs took on No. 2 Tufts University at LeFrak Gymnasium in the NESCAC Championship game March 2. The Amherst women controlled the game from start to finish and held off a late charge from Tufts to win the program’s first NESCAC title, 59-53.
