After taking degrees at Yale and Harvard, Rick Griffiths has taught at Amherst since 1972 and served as Associate Dean of the Faculty (2003–08 and 2011-13). He has published studies of Theocritus, Apollonius Rhodius, Virgil, Willa Cather, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison and, with fellow professor Stanley Rabinowitz, studies of Tolstoy and other Russian novelists. He is currently working on Greek culture in Egypt after Alexander.
