Departments seeking to hire a tenure-line faculty member submit a proposal to the Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) prior to the first Friday in December.  The request should include a long-range view of the department’s needs, as well as a description of the ways in which the envisioned FTE will meet immediate needs, fits into the department’s mission, and addresses college priorities, including the likelihood of attracting a diverse pool of applicants. Departments are also asked to note whether the proposed position is intended to be open rank, a replacement, or a new position. The CEP ranks the requests and then shares its recommendations with the provost and dean of the faculty and the president, who jointly determine final FTE allocations. Departments often engage in the process of external review prior to making an FTE request.
