Philip T. Ives '32 Weather Station
The wife and family of the late Philip T. Ives '32 last fall attended a ceremony naming the college's weather station in Ives's honor. Ives, who died in July 1992 at the age of 82, was a biology research associate at Amherst who recorded daily weather observations at the site for 44 years. Present for the dedication were Dorothy Ives of Amherst, right, and the Iveses' two sons and daughter: from the left, Donald F. Ives '69 of Worthington, Mass., Elinor Ives Goff of Haverford, Pa., and Richard T. Ives of Bethany, Conn. The observation post, now the Philip T. Ives '32 Weather Station, established by Prof. Ebenezer S. Snell (Amherst 1822) in August 1835, has produced one of the longest continuous histories of weather observation in the United States.
