Applying for a State ID or Driver's License

As of July 2023, eligible residents in Massachusetts can obtain a standard driver's license, regardless of immigration status, under the Work and Family Mobility Act.  To obtain an MA state ID, applicants are required to provide proof of immigration status.

Understanding Your Options

Required Documentation

To apply for standard driver's license:

  • Proof of identity, date of birth (either a foreign passport or consular ID; AND either a driver's license from another state, an original or certified birth certificate, foreign national ID, foreign driver's license, or marriage/divorce decree issued within the US)
  • Social security number status (SSN or Affidavit of No SSN)
  • Massachusetts residency (recommended: a letter from the Registrar's Office confirming your campus address)

To apply for a standard MA State ID:

  • Proof of Lawful Presence and Date of Birth (U.S. passport, birth certificate, green card, EAD, foreign passport with U.S. visa and I-94, etc.)
  • Proof of Social Security Number (SSN card, W-2, recent pay stub, SSN denial notice, etc.)
  • Proof of MA Residency (document displaying current residential address in MA with applicant's name; see the RMV checklist for a list of options; recommended: a letter from the Registrar's Office confirming your campus address)

To apply for a REAL ID driver's license or REAL MA State ID:

  • Proof of Lawful Presence and Date of Birth (U.S. passport, birth certificate, green card, EAD, foreign passport with U.S. visa and I-94, etc.)
  • Proof of Social Security Number (SSN card, W-2, recent pay stub, SSN denial notice, etc.)
  • Two pieces of proof of MA Residency (document displaying current residential address in MA with applicant's name; see the RMV checklist for a list of options; recommended: a letter from the Registrar's Office confirming your campus address)
