To enhance reliability and flexibility, Amherst classrooms will transition to laptop-only connections in the summer of 2024. Existing PC and Mac computers will be removed from most rooms. We find that many faculty already use laptops for teaching, an approach that ensures all teaching materials are readily accessible, including those needed unexpectedly. Laptop connections in Amherst classrooms have been streamlined and standardized for ease of use.

This change offers numerous benefits. Foremost, the simplified system will be significantly more reliable – just plug in a single cable and teach directly from your laptop, which is already loaded with your preferred setup and materials. Additionally, the environmental impact is substantial: by removing lesser-used installed computers, we reduce energy consumption and electronic waste. Finally, this change generates cost savings, allowing us to maintain funding for the essential software and systems you rely on for your work.

All IT-issued laptops either have a built-in HDMI port or come with an adapter for connecting to classroom projectors. All classrooms are equipped with Mersive Solstice devices for wireless screen sharing.

The following rooms will retain an installed computer in the podium:

  • Beneski 107 (Paino)
  • SMudd 014
  • SCCE A011
  • SCCE A131
  • SCCE E108
  • SCCE E110
  • SCCE E212
