Discussing Study Away with your Advisor

Students should first discuss their plans for study away with their academic advisers. Then, they should reach out to the Amherst College Office of Global Education for details and information on study away opportunities. Study away can be at an international or domestic location and usually takes place during the regular academic year. Students could also take courses off campus during January or the summer.

Choosing Fall or Spring Semester Study Away

Students interested in study away should choose a semester to be away that is compatible with fulfilling their BCBP major requirements.  It is often difficult to fulfill the BCBP requirements through study away programs, so advanced planning is critical.  Students have had the most luck when they plan early so that they fulfill their BCBP requirements while they are on campus or they go to an English-speaking study away program where they can fulfill one or two BCBP requirements while away.

Choosing Courses

When choosing courses to take while studying away or studying off campus, students should consult with their advisor and seek approval from the BCBP Chair for courses that they want to count toward the BCBP major.  Approval will require emailing the BCBP Chair a course description and syllabus. Students on the Biochemistry Track must take Biochemistry (BCBP 331) at Amherst College.
