What is the SLC and When Should I Make a Referral?

The Strategic Learning Center (SLC) assists students with skills related to how we think and learn, including those surrounding executive functioning (e.g., the capacity to manage time, multitask, plan ahead, and focus attention, among other thought processes) and metacognition (awareness and understanding of one's own learning processes).

We offer faculty consultations about student learning across course structures and teaching modalities. For a private consultation or to personally refer a student please email director Larissa Hopkins at lhopkins@amherst.edu.

When to Make Referrals

All students benefit from developing and honing study skills and learning strategies tailored to the Amherst College context.

  • Has a student shared with you that they are stressed and have a lot to do?
  • Do you have a student arriving late or missing class?
  • Do you have a student working on research or a thesis who wants to optimize their time?
  • Has a student shared with you that they wish they could read or study more efficiently?
  • Has a student expressed disappointment about the outcome of their first assignment or test?

All referrals are good referrals. At the SLC we individually and holistically assess each student’s needs, collaboratively support students with individualized learning plans, and connect students to additional key resources, as helpful.

For a private consultation or to personally refer a student please email director Larissa Hopkins at lhopkins@amherst.edu.
