What is the Schwarzman Scholarship?

The Schwarzman Scholarship offers a fully-funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where scholars earn a master’s degree in global affairs and join a community of leaders who will serve to deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world. 

All participants undertake a core curriculum that builds connections and serves as an anchor for the rest of their studies. In addition to the core curriculum, they choose elective courses from a variety of academic disciplines. Both core and elective courses are taught by some of Tsinghua’s most accomplished faculty, as well as by visiting scholars from other leading institutions, and by entrepreneurs, policymakers and thought leaders from around the world. 

Students are matched with senior mentors in business, academic, and government communities, participate in a cultural "deep dive," and do an internship. Chinese language courses are included, and are tailored to a full range of learning levels.

Information for Recommenders

When writing your Schwarzman application letter, explain how long you have known the candidate and in what capacity. If you are a faculty recommender, you might address how the candidate’s intellectual and academic abilities compare to other students from your institution. All recommenders should address, to the best of their ability, how the candidate demonstrates broad interests, sharp insights on complex issues, flexibility of thinking, and curiosity about the world. You might additionally describe the candidate’s personal characteristics and experiences that will contribute to their potential to take on leadership roles in the future. 

Format and submission: Schwarzman prefers that letters be on institutional letterhead and signed. Once a candidate has registered you, you will receive an email from the Schwarzman online application system inviting you to upload your letter. There is no longer an institutional endorsement process for the Schwarzman, although the Office of Fellowships may request to see your letter if your candidate is a finalist and will be interviewed by Schwarzman. The deadline for recommenders is September 12, 2024 at 3:00 pm EDT (US and Global applicants).
