Martha Umphrey, Bertrand H. Snell 1894 Professor in American Government in Amherst’s Department of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, was named provost and dean of the faculty in 2024. 

As Amherst’s chief academic officer​, the provost has primary responsibility for matters of academic policy and for the academic budget​ and oversees offices, departments, and programs that are at the core of academic life ​and those that support the administration of​ the college.
