flux mass
These mask-wearing audience members were part of the performance of Flux-Mass, a February recreation of the seminal 1970 performance piece of the same name. The original Flux-Mass, which took place at Rutgers University, was largely improvised, an outgrowth of the larger Fluxus movement of experimental art. The recent Amherst production was slightly less spontaneous, but still involved costumes, startling juxtapositions of images and religious and secular themes, and (obviously) masks. The performers included students from Rutgers and Hampshire College, as well as several artists from the original Flux-Mass.
