The basketball court at LeFrak Gymnasium has a new name: Hixon Court.

On a chilly Saturday in May, former players, colleagues and family members converged on the court for its formal dedication in honor of longtime men’s basketball coach Dave Hixon ’75, who retired in 2020 after 42 years at Amherst.

“Dave, you’ve made such a mark on this place, and it’s only fitting that we should be here to see what will be a lasting mark of your accomplishments and your contributions,” said President Biddy Martin.

Dozens of players across several generations surrounded the spot on the floor that is now adorned with Hixon’s name and signature. A plaque listing some of his career highlights—including his teams’ two NCAA Division III championships, in 2008 and 2013—now graces a nearby wall.

In his Amherst coaching career, Hixon clocked an extraordinary 826 victories, the most with a single team of any coach in Amherst history, as well as the third-most among Division III men’s basketball coaches and the 15th-most across all three divisions.
