With funding from a substantial grant made by Wallace Dayton '43 to support proposals from the Faculty for the evolution of the study of environmental science, we offer the following request for proposals.

GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSALS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

The Faculty Research Awards Program Committee seeks proposals in any one or any combination of the following areas:

• Development of new courses. A $5,000 summer stipend may be requested for the development of a new course in some aspect of environmental science.
• Funding for the incorporation of material on environmental science into existing courses.
• Funding for the development of laboratory modules in environmental science. The goal of such modules would be to help students understand, through new laboratory exercises, the ways in which concepts basic to each of the sciences can be applied to the environment.
• Seminars. It is anticipated that voluntary, interdisciplinary seminars will be organized by one or more members of the faculty and will consist of presentations by faculty, students, and invited speakers.
• Equipment. Modest funding is available for instructional laboratory equipment or computer software germane to the development of new laboratory modules and new courses directly related to environmental science.
• Summer Stipend for Student Assistant. $480 per week for up to 10 weeks.

Eligibility

Individual applications may be made by any regular members of the Faculty. Additionally, departmental and interdepartmental applications will be accepted, from individuals or groups.

Deadline

Applications must be sent as an electronic file to Lauren Banfield in the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty by October 1 or February 2.  

Amount of Award

Grants ranging from $500 to $10,000 may be requested. For those projects receiving awards, the size of the award may differ from the amount requested in light of other demands on available funds and the project's requirements as evaluated in the review process.

The Proposal

Each proposal should describe how it will support the introduction of environmental science into the curriculum. Except for those requesting the summer stipend only, each proposal should include a detailed budget, including the reasons for the funds requested. Those requesting a summer stipend for development of a new course must include a detailed plan of what their project includes, its aims, previous work in the field, procedures, and the resulting rationale expected to be developed. To indicate that applicants have developed their proposals in consultation with their departments, the Department Chair should counter-sign the proposal.

Final Report

All recipients are required to submit a detailed final report at the end of the period of their grant. Summer stipend recipients must submit copies of the materials developed, including a syllabus with readings, typical assignments, problem sets, laboratory exercises, etc.
